Accounting software firm Sage invests £40m in new tech hub in North East England, as part of its national £300m and 500 job commitment.

Sage, the cloud business management solutions firm today announces a £40m investment in the North East in the next three years, to be spent on technology and customer facing capabilities. 

“The UK’s tech sector is fast becoming a centre of global excellence, and Sage is particularly proud to be part of this, and to have such a significant home in the North East,” said Steve Hare, CEO of Sage in a statement. 

“Our colleagues are one of our main strengths, and I’m pleased that this investment will create a great experience for them and a fantastic environment for innovation,” he said.

The new hub will house product development, innovation, sales and customer services for Sage. The company, founded in Newcastle over 30 years ago, will also move its flagship offices from North Park to Cobalt Business Park, both located in the North of the city.

“Vote of confidence” for North East business

The investment has also attracted attention from national and local politicians with Secretary of State for International Trade, Dr Liam Fox MP commenting: “Sage’s investment shows a firm commitment to the UK and will help create high-quality jobs and drive prosperity into local communities in the North East.”

Likewise, Mayor of the North of Tyne, Jamie Driscoll believes the investment in the new technology hub is a “great vote of confidence” for the region, and able to bring skilled jobs to the low-carbon economy while also boosting SMEs in the area.

Sage also announced it is hoping to fill 500 roles in product engineering, data science, support and sales across its Newcastle, Manchester, Reading and London sites. According to Sabby Gill, UK & Ireland managing director at Sage, there are currently 200 job opening in the North East alone.

The move is due in late 2020 where 2000 Sage employees and all new hires will benefit from the refurbished hub. The future of the North Park site remains undecided.
